Indonesia aims to build 15 million houses in five years

Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka have sketched out a number of programmes in service of national development in the time ahead.

One of them pertains to the housing sector, with the new government aiming to build 15 million houses — three million every year — during its five-year term, according to a government official.

Statistics show that thousands of impoverished citizens are living in the areas lacking basic necessities such as clean water, electricity, and Internet access. Therefore, the housing initiative is part of the government's efforts to help residents stabilise their lives.

The official informed that the three million homes each year will comprise one million apartment units in urban areas and two million in rural areas.

He said that the construction of two million homes in villages could support job creation.

Many aspects will need to be considered to realise the housing programme, including financing, land acquisition, building materials, permits, and subsidies for the target community, the official noted, saying fulfilling those aspects will require not only ordinary policies but extraordinary solutions.

The programme is expected to help tackle the housing backlog or shortage of 12.7 million homes./.
