Authorities in the central city of Hue are intensifying surveillance of operating fishing vessels, aiming to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.

Hue is home to 437 offshore boats equipped with vessel monitoring system (VMS) devices. Between October 2024 and January 2025, the city's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed 476 arrivals and 402 departures of fishing vessels at ports, collected 476 fishing logbooks, and monitored over 763 tonnes of seafood from these operations.

The municipal border guard has issued administrative violation reports for two cases involving three vessels, imposing fines totaling over 97 million VND (3,830 USD).

Recently, Hue completed the registration of 453 three no's fishing vessels (unregistered, uninspected, and unlicenced) ranging from 6 to under 12 metres in length, bringing the total number of registered boats in the city to 1,127. For vessels whose inspection certificates or offshore fishing permits have lapsed, the municipal authorities are urging owners to promptly complete necessary procedures, ensuring strict monitoring to prevent these boats from operating at sea.

Hue has also called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to develop policies supporting the three no's vessels to ensure compliance with regulations. It also urged the registration agencies to update vessel data in the VNFishbase system, enabling local authorities to effectively combat IUU fishing./.
