Vietnamese, Singaporean leaders highlight complementary strengths

Party General Secretary To Lam touched upon major directions and specific measures to implement the newly-established Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at a meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on March 12.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee To Lam met with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on March 12 as part of his official visit to the city state, during which the leaders emphasised complementary strengths of the two countries.

Lam congratulated Singapore on maintaining its impressive growth momentum and effective policies in support of its people, especially low-income earners.

He touched upon major directions and specific measures to implement the newly-established Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including making the two countries pioneering partners in the region in collaboration in science-technology, innovation, digital transformation, energy, data connectivity, semiconductor chip production, new technologies, and artificial intelligence.

The Party chief shared President Tharman’s views on strengthening solidarity and cooperation between the two countries, as well as with other ASEAN member states, to enhance resilience and self-reliance in response to external challenges.

For his part, Tharman stressed that Lam’s official visit holds special significance, with the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership which opens up a new chapter for their ties at a crucial time for both countries. He noted that this development would generate fresh momentum and inspiration for their people and businesses.

The host leader expressed his confidence that Vietnam will maintain its position as one of the most dynamic economies in the region, with impressive GDP growth, an attractive investment environment, and a continuously rising international standing.

Showing his support for Lam’s proposals, Tharman said the two countries should carry forward exemplary cooperation models and further capitalise on opportunities in emerging fields like digital transformation and carbon credit market.

He also emphasised the need to strengthen energy cooperation and enhance electricity network connectivity, including within the ASEAN power grid.

Regarding international and regional issues, the two leaders noted similarities, coordination, and complementary strengths of the two countries, as well as joint efforts in ensuring a stable environment and promoting sustainable development in the region.

On this occasion, General Secretary Lam conveyed the regards and invitation from President Luong Cuong to President Tharman to visit Vietnam soon. The Singaporean leader accepted the invitation with pleasure./.
