Việt Nam’s mobile networks have entered the global top spots in term of speed, according to internet analytics firm Ookla’s latest Speedtest report.
Viettel was ranked third for overall mobile performance with a score of 82.56 just behind UEA’s e& (88.05) and Quatar’s Ooredoo (87.05) and ahead of Singapore’s Singtel (82.53).

At a press briefing held by the Ministry of Science and Technology on Tuesday, Deputy Director of the Việt Nam Telecommunications Authority Nguyễn Phong Nhã said that robust 5G rollout and gradual phasing out of legacy technologies like 2G and 3G by telecom service providers help improve the mobile internet performance in Việt Nam.
The ministry’s mid-year review report also pointed out that with the acceleration of digital infrastructure development, including the expansion of 5G network, 26 per cent of Việt Nam’s population has access to 5G services.
The target for 2025 is to develop over 68,000 5G stations – equivalent to 57.5 per cent of existing 4G stations and covering up to 90 per cent of the population.
Viettel currently operates more than 6,500 5G base transceiver (BTS) stations with 5.5 million 5G subscribers by the end of January. The military-run operator aims to expand to over 20,000 5G stations this year and cover over 90 per cent of the population with 5G and convert 70 per cent of its mobile user base to 5G.
VinaPhone now has nearly four million 5G users after just six months of commercialisation. 5G devices now account for 80 per cent of VinaPhone's subscriber base.
Statistics from i-Speed of Việt Nam Internet Centre showed that average mobile data speed reached 75.19 Mbps, in which, Viettel led with 83.6 Mbps, up 26 per cent year-on-year, followed by VNPT at 70.71 Mbps and MobiFone at 52.47 Mbps. — BIZHUB/VNS
