The Trade Competition Commission of Thailand (TCCT) is moving to modernise its regulatory framework to align Thailand's competition laws more closely with international standards.
Following its participation in negotiations to upgrade the ASEAN – Korea Free Trade Agreement (AKFTA) in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, the TCCT underscored the growing importance of incorporating competition law cooperation into international trade agreements.
Leading the talks, TCCT Vice Chairman Assoc. Prof. Sudharma Yoonaidharma said Thailand is expected to benefit from the upgraded AKFTA through closer cooperation among competition authorities and improved policy coordination among member countries. The changes will demonstrate that Thailand's competition laws align with international standards, enhancing the country's credibility among global trading partners.
The TCCT is also reviewing business mergers to prevent anti-competitive behaviour that could negatively affect Thai small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition, the commission is expanding educational programmes to help SMEs better understand how to respond to unfair trade practices and compete more effectively in the marketplace./.
