Myanmar begins second round of general election

This is the first election in Myanmar since the military government assumed power five years ago. A total of 57 political parties are participating in the election, including six parties running nationwide, with around 5,000 candidates vying for seats in the parliament.

Myanmar began the second round of voting in the country’s on-going general election in 100 townships across the country on January 11.

The general election is being conducted in three phases, with more than 21,000 polling stations set up nationwide. The first phase took place in 102 townships on December 28, 2025, recording a voter turnout of 52.13%.

Election observer delegations from nine countries visited polling stations to monitor the voting process. The third and final round is scheduled to take place on January 25 in 63 townships.
