ASEAN set for historic milestone in October with Timor Leste’s accession
Timor Leste is expected to become the 11th permanent member of ASEAN at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in October is expected to mark a historic turning point as the bloc formally admits Timor Leste as its 11th permanent member.
The move comes nearly 14 years since the country applied for membership in 2011.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said at a press briefing on August 16 that most of ASEAN’s requirements have already been fulfilled by Timor-Leste, noted that ASEAN has shown strong consensus in admitting Timor Leste at the upcoming summit and pledged continued support to help the nation accomplish its obligations as a member.
The expansion will not only strengthen ASEAN’s position and influence, but also reaffirm the bloc’s commitment to building a united and prosperous region.
The development carries political significance while opening up fresh opportunities for economic cooperation, enabling Timor Leste to integrate more deeply into Southeast Asia’s growth./.
