Over 80% of Singaporeans encounter harmful online content
The most frequent types of harmful online content cited by respondents included material supporting illegal activities such as scams, content of a sexual or violent nature, cyberbullying, and material that could cause racial or religious tension.
More than 80% of Singapore residents reported encountering harmful online content in the past year, according to the survey findings recently released by the country's Ministry of Digital Development and Information.
The most frequent types of harmful online content cited by respondents included material supporting illegal activities such as scams, content of a sexual or violent nature, cyberbullying, and material that could cause racial or religious tension, the ministry said.
One in three respondents also reported experiencing harmful online behaviours. Catfishing was the most common, followed by unwanted sexual messages and online harassment.
Over 60% of those surveyed called for stronger regulation to protect Singaporeans from online harms, according to the survey conducted with thousands of citizens and permanent residents aged 15 years and older./.
