Laos is home to over 500 fish species, which play a vital role in maintaining the country's ecological balance and represent an important part of its natural heritage. Each year, nationwide activities are held to raise public awareness, especially among young people, about the importance of conserving aquatic life and protecting ecosystems.

Laos plans to release more than 65 million fish fingerlings and other aquatic species into rivers nationwide this year, part of activities celebrating its National Aquatic and Wildlife Day on July 13.

As reported by the Xinhua news agency, speaking at a press conference on July 7, Lao Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Chanthakhone Boualaphanh highlighted the significance of the day and emphasised the government's commitment to the sustainable management, protection, and development of aquatic resources, which are vital to the livelihoods of the Lao people.
