Indonesia's Ministry of Social Affairs has identified over 200 potential sites for the establishment of people’s schools (Sekolah Rakyat), a programme designed to provide free, quality education to children from economically disadvantaged families.

Minister Saifullah Yusuf said these sites include ministry-owned land and buildings, as well as locations proposed by governors, district heads, and mayors.

Of the identified sites, more than 160 were secured from regional governments, with 115 comprising plots of land measuring at least five hectares. The remainder are ministry-owned properties in need of renovation.

To meet the target of launching 70 schools this year, the ministry will assess site feasibility and seek presidential approval, Yusuf said. He added that no specific region would be prioritised, as the president has instructed the establishment of at least one Sekolah Rakyat in each district and city./.
