The Hà Nội-based Bạch Mai General Hospital announced that the hospital’s doctors have successfully saved the life of a young girl who suffered a damaged heart due to a tragic traffic accident.

The patient is P.L.Q.L., 21 years old and residing in Thường Tín District, Hà Nội. The student had a traffic accident on the evening of February 28 when she was on her way home after tutoring.

The patient was given first aid and transferred to Thường Tín Hospital in a coma and circulatory arrest. Here, the patient had to be intubated and urgently transferred to Bạch Mai General Hospital about 60 minutes after the accident.

At Bạch Mai Hospital, the patient was immediately given emergency heart compression by doctors. Luckily, the patient's circulation returned and she was immediately transferred to the operating room, said the director of Bạch Mai General Hospital Đào Xuân Cơ.

In the operating room, the cardiologist discovered that the patient’s heart was damaged. During surgery, doctors removed about 1.5 kilos of blood clots and blood fluid while transfusing up to 10 litres of blood to save the patient's life.

"An inter-departmental coordination, including internal medicine, surgery and emergency resuscitation, has helped us save the patient's life," said Associate Professor Cơ.

After three weeks of intensive treatment, the patient was completely lucid and had no mental and mobility consequences after emergency circulatory arrest. She now can return to normal life.

"In addition to inter-departmental coordination, initial emergency care is very important to save a patient's life. This case was treated effectively outside the hospital and at the front line. Only then did we have a chance to save the patient,” added Prof. Cơ.
